Lambarene
A historic landmark in Gabon, and a milestone for medicinal research against malaria in West & Central Africa. Its promoter, the Nobel Peace Prize Winner Doctor Albert Schweitzer, was a theologian and an emblematic figure for the fight against numerous tropical diseases in Africa. He founded the world renowned Lambarene Hospital in 1913, now turned into a remarkably beautiful and popular museum along the Ogooué River. This rich museum showcases a wide collection of ancient medical tools that were used during Schweitzer time in Africa as well as the traces of the challenges he faced in a peculiarly hostile world marked by tropical disease.
The museum has well preserved much of Schweitzer’s operating room, bedroom and personal objects, all of which are still intact. Your visit to the museum takes you back in time as you walk through Dr. Albert personal spaces as if he had just left yesterday and you will be able to listen to his story and see his belongings. The old rooms where the nurses used to live until 1981 is converted into adequate guest rooms with double roof and an east-west floor plan where sun never shine through the windows.
